Kinzua, one of the oldest and most respected lumber brands in Oregon is now produced in one of the most technologically advanced sawmills in the Eastern Oregon. With our recent completion of a multi-million dollar upgrade, our Pilot Rock sawmill now boasts the following technology:

Large Log Mill

The Head Rig utilizes a state of the art Inovec Log Scanner that scans every log as the log is loaded on to the carriage. Scanning the log increases lumber recovery while allowing Kinzua to maximize grade recovery from each log.

Optimized Board Edger

To accent the high tech Head Rig, we also have a fully optimized Board Edger. Scanning each and every board benefits us by increasing piece count thus reducing manufacturing costs. We also gain valuable grade recovery by allowing the scanning computer to compute thousands of decisions in milliseconds based on the value of each piece.

Double Arbor Two Zone Gang

Our recently installed two-zone Double Arbor twelve-inch gang edger gives Kinzua Resources tremendous flexibility in our manufacturing process. We are able to process items from four inches to twelve inches wide and any width in between. Lumber thickness options are many, from domestic sizes to metric sizes. With a two-zone gang, we are able to manufacture different thicknesses and widths at the same time simply by shifting the slabber heads from the right zone to the left or visa- versa. Our goal is to maximize our high quality timber and with the Double Arbor Gang we are achieving just that goal.

Small Log Mill

Kinzua recently installed the first CAE McGehee SL 2000 Variable Profiling Small Log processor in the United States. With this totally optimized machine we are able to take advantage of the latest in curve sawing technology while achieving high piece count through put of approximately 20+ logs per minute. The variable profiling heads give us the ability to increase lumber recovery from logs that until recently would have yielded significantly less product. Feeding the small log mill is a newly installed high-speed log barking system along with a fully optimized log bucking station. The optimized bucking station allows us to recover maximum yield from each log by determining the length, diameter, crook and sweep and based on this, identifies where the log should be bucked. Thanks to value added optimization at the log bucking station, we are also able cut the log to length based on optimum diameter for a given length thus creating the highest value for each log segment when the log is processed into lumber.

Trimmer Scanner

The fully optimized Inovec sawmill trimmer scanner processes lumber based on lumber value. This machine processes tremendous amounts of information based on parameters set into the optimizer computer by management. As with the other upstream optimizers the highest lumber value and lumber volume are key.
